Fairfield U. Picks Princeton's Johnson as Coach

Princeton University's Sydney Johnson will be named the new coach of the Fairfield University men's basketball team, the school announced Monday on its website. Johnson will be introduced at a press conference Wednesday at 11 a.m.

The Tigers won the Ivy League championship and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Kentucky. He has been the head coach at Princeton since 2007, when his first team went 6-23. He also played at Princeton, helping the Tigers to a 24-4 record in his senior year. He is 66-53 in four years at Princeton, including a 25-7 record this year.

Under Johnson, Princeton earned a reputation as one of the top defensive teams in the country. The Tigers led the nation in scoring defense during the 2009-10 season, allowing fewer total points (1652) and fewest points per game (53.3) than any other Division I team that year. Johnson was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year by Collegeinsider.com following the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.

Before taking over the Princeton program, Johnson was an assistant coach at Georgetown University under John Thompson III. He replaces Ed Cooley , who resigned after the season to become the head coach at Providence.
