Fairfield U. Stags Spend Summer Honing Skills On The Baseball Diamond

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Thirteen members of the Fairfield University baseball team participated in various summer leagues around the East Coast.

“We are proud to have so many of our players involved in the collegiate summer leagues,” Head Coach Bill Currier said in a press release. “Not only was this an experience they could learn from off the field, the opportunity to get at-bats against some of the best pitching in the country, or pitch to talented hitters, will be vital to their growth on the diamond.”

The 13 players and their experiences are:

  • Troy Scocca played for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs. The rising junior outfielder was selected for his league's All-Star game and helped bring the team a league championship for the first time in franchise history. He led the league in triples (six), finished tied for third in home runs (six) and finished seventh with a .335 batting average.
  • Brendan Tracy played for the Amsterdam Mohawks. The infielder set a franchise record with his 56th career walk for the Mohawks this past season. He also finished fifth in the league with a .350 batting average, tied for third in home runs (six), sixth in doubles (11) and third in walks (31). Tracy also was selected to his league's All-Star game.
  • Kyle Dube played for the Bristol Blues. The right hander started all nine games he appeared in and posted a 2.45 ERA, helping the Blues to a first-place regular season finish. Dube had a 3-0 record and struck out 34 batters in 51.1 innings. In the biggest game of the season, Dube went seven shutout innings to help the Blues secure a spot in the championship game.
  • Ryan O’Connor played for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs The left-handed pitcher helped the DiamondDawgs to their first title in franchise history. The junior took the ball in the semi-finals and tossed four shutout innings. During the regular season, O’Connor notched a 2-1 record and struck out 35 batters in his 33.1 innings pitched.
  • Drew Arciuolo played for the Southampton Breakers. The rising sophomore outfielder ranked fourth on the team with a .279 batting average. In his 36 games, he scored 18 runs and recorded 18 RBI. He also was successful on 10 of his 12 stolen-base attempts.
  • Drew Blake played for the Brockton Rox. The rising sophomore hit one home run and had nine RBI during his 19 games. Although Blake hit just .137 during the summer, he spent time at third base for the first time in his career, and improved his defense.
  • Aaron Howell played for the Waynesboro Generals. Although Howell made only two starts, the 9.2 innings was valuable for a pitcher who is expected to fight for a spot in the rotation this upcoming season. Howell received the win in both of his starts, recording a 3.72 ERA.
  • Mike Bonaiuto played for the Westhampton Aviators. Bonaiuto made nine appearances for the Aviators, seven in relief. The left hander threw 23.2 innings and had a 3.80 ERA. Bonaiuto recorded one save during the summer and struck out 15 batters in 23.2 innings.
  • Michael Conti played for the Torrington Titans. He ranked fourth on his team with a .250 batting average in 35 games. Conti also finished fifth on the Titans with 16 runs scored while drawing 31 walks, second on the team.
  • Mac Crispino played for the Torrington Titans. Crispino racked up 23 hits, 14 walks and seven stolen bases, which ranked fourth on the team, in 35 games.
  • Joe Randall played for the Amsterdam Mohawks. Randall came out of the bullpen 17 times during the summer, throwing 24.2 innings. The right hander recorded a 2-0 record while allowing 16 hits in 24.2 innings, while striking out 23.
  • David Sacco played for the Westhampton Aviators. He appeared in nine games, six out of the bullpen and recorded a 2.15 ERA. Sacco struck out 15 batters in his 25 innings, helping the Aviators to the championship game.
  • Gavin Wallace played for the Albany Dutchmen. Wallace started seven games, picking up two wins. The right hander threw at least six innings in six of those starts, throwing one complete game. Wallace recorded 24 strikeouts.
