Fairfield Warde Football Falls To Trinity

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Although its progress might not be reflected in the record, Fairfield Warde’s football team showed improvement in Saturday’s 34-13 loss to undefeated Trinity Catholic in Stamford.

The Mustangs (1-5) were down by just 20-13 in the second quarter after a 40-yard touchdown run by Dawud Mohamed, but they could not contain Trinity’s brilliant back, Shaquan Howsie, who rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns.

“We had our opportunities,’’ Warde head coach Duncan Dellavolpe said. “If we could find a way to score at the right time and not give up the one big play, we’d be in better shape. We can still hang with anybody.”

Warde trailed, 26-13, at halftime and was down 34-13 after Howsie scored on a 15-yard run early in the third quarter. Warde then mounted its best drive of the day, taking more than 10 minutes off the clock as it drove from its own 25-yard line to the Trinity 5. The drive ended there, and so did any chance of a Warde comeback.

“The kids have practiced well,’’ Dellavolpe said. “They don’t give up, there’s no quit in them. We’ve got some senior leadership that is really helping the younger kids come along. Realistically, it looks like we are just kind of getting warmed up and we’re just starting our season. But now we’re six games in.”

Quarterback Max Garrett rushed 14 times for 67 yards. Kerven Jaques had Warde’s other score, a three-yard run.

Warde, which has played a powerful schedule already this fall, faces tough games the next two weeks against St. Joseph and Staples. The Mustangs are improving, and they certainly caught Howsie’s attention.

“I got hit a few times and I was like ‘Whew,’’’ said Howsie, who also had scoring runs of 65 and 17 yards. “I went into the game thinking they were a good team. We didn’t take them lightly. They were better than I thought they were.”
