Fairfield American Little League, representing Connecticut, clinched a spot in the 10-year-old East Region Invitational semifinals with a 12-2 victory over Massachusetts Tuesday night in Cranston, R.I. Fairfield (3-0) allowed its first runs of the tournament but nevertheless rolled over the Massachusetts team by the mercy rule in a five-inning game.
Ryan Meury led the charge for Fairfield with three hits, reaching base four times. Pitcher Matt Clarkin earned the victory.
Fairfield has outscored opponents 21-2 in the team's three games. The All-Stars play one more pool play game, against Rhode Island (1-1) Thursday night. But even with a loss, Fairfield would have a spot in the semifinals against either the number one or number two seed from the Mid-Atlantic division.
This is the first season for the East Region Invitational, the highest level of play for the 10-year-olds. The 10s team is one of three state champions for Fairfield American Little League. The 11s ended their season with a victory on Saturday. The 12s team is attempting a run to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn., a nationally televised event. They will be playing in the New England Regional on Friday night in Bristol.
