Area residents are invited to Staples Stadium to enjoy an exciting afternoon of lacrosse while supporting an important cause.

The Sticks for Soldiers organization raises funds to support wounded veterans and their families. The action takes place at 70 North Ave. in Westport.

Participation in SFS events creates community awareness, specifically among high school athletes, to the profound sacrifices being made by people just a few years older than themselves.

Since 2006, these lacrosse tournaments have raised more than $700,000.

Saturday’s Staples High School program will include Staples Girls Lacrosse versus Ridgefield at 4 p.m. and Boys Lacrosse versus Trumbull at 6 p.m.

Between games at 5:30 p.m. there will be a ceremony featuring Presentation of Colors by Brien McMahon High School Navy JROTC Color Guard,

The National Anthem will be performed by Staples Junior Ben Rowland. Opening remarks will be made by Sticks For Soldiers President Jeff Casucci followed by a keynote speech by James Hazelip. Hazelip is a U.S. Army veteran with multiple deployments to Iraq during the Global War on Terror.

Westport Police Athletic League youth teams will be out to show their continued support by participating in scrimmages at halftimes.

A suggested minimum donation of $5 for admission to both games will be collected at the stadium and there will be plenty of treats and drinks for sale. All money raised will go directly to the organization and the veterans it serves.
