For the third straight season the Fairfield Prep boys tennis team has won the Southern Connecticut Conference tennis championship. The Jesuits (17-1) defeated Cheshire 5-2 on Wednesday at Yale University to secure the title. They have lost only one match in the past two seasons and have a solid chance of finishing the season as the number one team in the state.
Prep will face stiff competition at the state tournament, which begins June 3, from Staples (17-0) and Greenwich (16-2), which has won five consecutive Class LL state titles.
Tom O'Brien, the top singles player for Prep, is undefeated this year and will play at Villanova next season. He defeated Bryan Adams 6-2, 6-1. Ryan Carr, who will be attending UConn, defeated Spencer Beck 6-1, 6-1 and Colby-bound Jason Ottomano defeated Dan Grove 6-2, 6-3. Last season Ottomano and O'Brien won the State Open Doubles title.
Prep also picked up victories by Chris Kinney and Wes Craft, while both doubles teams fell in their matches.
