Gov. M. Jodi Rell has joined the chorus of well-wishers congratulating the Fairfield American Little League squad following its victory over Rhode Island in the New England Regional on Saturday.

"On to Williamsport!" Rell said in a statement. "On behalf of the State of Connecticut, I congratulate Fairfield American on making it to the Little League World Series."

Fairfield defeated the Cumberland, R.I., team in a 1-0 pitcher's duel seen live around the nation on ESPN. With the victory, Fairfield moves on to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

"This team has taken its fans on an incredible journey this summer, and the fun is not over yet. Everyone in our state is rooting for this team, and I wish them the very best of luck," Rell continued.

Fairfield heads to Williamsport Monday evening. Fairfield First Selectman Ken Flatto and his staff are preparing a community pep rally to cheer the team on. It will likely take place later this week, possibly Thursday, Flatto's office said. More information will be released shortly.

Fairfield's first game will be against Northwest Region champions Auburn, Wash. on Friday at 1 p.m. on ESPN.
