Fairfield's 9- and 10-year-old softball All-Stars finished perfect in pool play and won the New England section of the East Region Invitational Tuesday with a 4-0 victory over Maine at Fleetsville, Pa. Brittany Romero's no-hitter clinched a 3-0 record in pool play. Fairfield will play Pennsylvania Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the tournament semifinals. The winner advances to Saturday's championship game.
Romero struck out 16 batters. Michaela O'Donnell snared a line drive at third for the game's final out. The other out came on a failed bunt. Romero walked one. Maddie Russell and Anna Rasmussen had two hits apiece for Fairfield. Mary Rose Finnigan, Shannon McCartney and and Romero also had hits.
Fairfield scored two runs in the third. Romero walked followed by infield singles by Finnigan and Rasmussen. Romero and Finnigan scored when the ball got away from the Maine infield. Fairfield added two runs in the sixth on Russell's single up the middle.
Fairfield now plays Pennsylvania on Friday. Manager Dave McCartney said Pennsylvania is a legitimate tournament threat. "The biggest team from the Mid-Atlantic and possibly the best team we have seen in our scouting efforts,'' McCartney wrote in an e-mail.
