Sacred Heart Football Coach Wins Courage Award

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University football coach Paul Gorham has been named the winner of the Chelsea Cohen Award by the Fairfield County Sports Commission.

He will be honored at the Commission’s 8th Annual Sports Night awards dinner at 6 p.m, Oct. 15 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.

The award is sponsored by the Forever Young Foundation, the charitable giving entity of Steve Young, who was raised in Greenwich and is an NFL Hall of Famer. In 2006, the sports commission created the award, which is named after a former Norwalk High soccer star. She died in 2006 after of a rare form of cancer of the nervous system. The award recognizes the person in the sports community who has shown inspirational strength in battling life-altering obstacles.

Gorham suffered from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a disease of the lungs. After undergoing lung transplants in February, he lost the lower portion of both legs due to circulation problems brought on by procedures prior to the transplants.

The Sacred Heart coach is still receiving medical treatment. While he recovers, he is serving a limited role under associate head coach Mark Nofri with the Pioneers.

In Gorham’s name, Forever Young and the sports commission will make a donation of $2,000 to the Commission’s Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy.
