Jessica Deutsch stopped shots with her legs, her stick and her body during Fairfield Warde's 4-0 victory over Greenwich in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference field hockey semifinals at New Canaan High School.
The senior goalie stopped 21 shots as Warde notched its eighth shutout of the season. Darcy Berger scored two goals for the third-seeded Mustangs (11-4), who will meet Darien in the FCIAC championship game at 4 p.m. Friday at Brien McMahon High School.
"She was unbelievable,'' Warde coach Jodie Shannon said of Deutsch. "She was flying all over the place."
Deutsch saved her best saves for the second half when Greenwich pressed the attack to get on the scoreboard. She kicked aside shot after shot as the Cardinals tried to mount a comeback. Deutsch wouldn't let them.
Berger scored 2:45 into the game when she one-timed a pass from Jillian Tallent into the Greenwich cage. Berger connected again about 11 minutes later, and Lindsey Adams' goal 1:42 before halftime gave Warde a 3-0 lead. Stacy Dileo added the final goal in the second half.
"I've only beaten Greenwich once and that was in the state final in 2004,'' Shannon said. Greenwich beat Warde, 2-1, earlier this year and also knocked the Mustangs out of last year's FCIAC playoffs.
