WILTON, Conn. -- Many of Wilton High School’s teams have won state championships over the years. Its girls basketball team, however, has a chance to make history this weekend.

The Warriors (24-2) advanced to the Class LL championship game Monday with a 55-54 win over third-seeded Mercy.

No. 2 Wilton plays No. 1 South Windsor (24-0) in the championship game at Mohegan Sun. The day and tip-off time for the game has not yet been announced.

The trip to the championship is the first for the Wilton girls.

The Warriors earned the league No. 1 seed during the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference regular season but fell to Ridgefield, 49-47, in the semifinals of the league tournament. Wilton’s 1989 team, which included former U.S. soccer star Kristine Lilly, won the league championship but did not reach the state title game.

Erica Meyer scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win over Mercy. Karen Brosko added 14 points, including two huge 3-pointers in the second half when the Warriors fought back from a 35-26 halftime deficit. Her first trimmed Mercy's 41-35 led to 41-38. Brosko’s second three-pointer tied the game at 44-44 early in the final quarter, and a basket by Meyer moments later put the Warriors ahead to stay.

Hayley English came up with the defensive play of the game in the final seconds. Wilton led 55-54 with about 10 seconds left when Mercy grabbed a rebound off a missed foul shot. English stole the ball from Mercy’s Kendra Landy as she tried to set up for a potential game-winning shot to preserve the win for Wilton.

Erin Cunningham leads the Warriors with an average of 15.8 points per game. Seniors Cunningham, Meyer (14.8 points per game) and English (7.4 ppg), Makenna Pearsall and Hannah Maatallah have been the cornerstones of a team that has gone 80-19 over the past four seasons.

Wilton lost in the second round of the state tournament in 2013 and 2013, and in the quarterfinals last year.

Wilton beat Newington, Cheshire and Stamford in the state tournament before taking out Mercy. South Windsor has won two tight contests in its last two games, including a 69-66 win over Greenwich in the quarterfinals. Wilton pounded Greenwich, 92-52, on Dec. 19.

Wilton’s team is seniors Meyer, Cunningham, English, Pearsall and Maatallah; juniors Brosko, Sarah Fitzgerald, Caraline Higgins, Taylor Ingerman, Christina Holmgren and Hana Previte; sophomore Caylin Cannavino and freshman Claire Gulbin, Lauren Robertson and Emily Tuin.

Wilton’s field hockey team took second in the Class M tournament in the final. The Warriors won state titles in girls lacrosse and girls tennis last spring.
