An 88-year-old man has died just over a week after he was hit by a pick-truck, the York County Coroner's office announced on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
John Smeltzer of the 100 block of Claire Avenue, Hellam Borough was crossing West Market Street with his dog when he was struck by a 2017 Chevy Silverado turning onto the road from South Lee Street around 5:30pm on May 3, 2023, authorities explained.
Smeltzer was taken to WellSpan York Hospital where he died from blunt force trauma to his head at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023, as certified by Deputy Coroner Michelle Rau.

Devon Mansberger, 31, of York Haven, died at the scene of the crash just west of Granite Station Road at 4:15 p.m. Apr. 5, Pennsylvania state police report citing the Adams County coroner's office.
The vehicle was driven by Aiden Bower, 21, of Red Lion, who lost control— veering right off the roadway, striking a utility pole, going over an embankment, and finally hitting a tree, state police say.
