Staples has let WalMart, Best Buy and Costco beat them on price for different items. They are no longer a "go to" destination for supplies carried by other vendors. They should have made some kind of niche with unique service that differentiated them from big box stores. Case in point: I never hear about what I have accumulated in Staples rewards and how/when to redeem them. View Comment

The Newsweek article is a shoddy piece of journalism, if one can even call it that. I urge you to read the comments that follow. At least the piece might bring national attention to a regional issue that has reached a crisis point, and it might spur our elected officials to be all over Metro North management like a bear on a beehive. The MTA monopoly has been accountable to no one. So consumers -- riders -- have gotten deferred maintenance, non- and mis-communication, crowding, decreased reliability and questionable safety for years of increased fares.
Here's a gentleman with no prior experience as a superintendent. Will he receive the current level salary or the starting salary of his predecessor, which I think is fair, saving the taxpayers some money? View Comment
The Old Farmer's Almanac called for a cold, snowy winter over 2013-14. I heard their forecasters are right 80% of the time. Not the kind of batting average you want to see in the performance of your pilot or surgeon, but acceptable with these old-timers! Ironic that MN has used "state-of-the-art technology to perform a complete and comprehensive assessment of our track on all three lines" and yet has not replaced 100-year-old cantenary lines that cause problems during extreme heat and cold spells. And there must be some technology to allow for heat devices to be implanted in third rails and switches so they wouldn't freeze. View Comment
Are you high? What the hell are you trying to say? I think Permut's record of the past year or more is, at the very least, a disgrace. Loss of lives and serious injuries to passengers top the list. Then, raising fares, followed by the failure to replace 100-year-old cantenary lines, this past month stranding passengers on one of the coldest nights in years. Most recently on his watch, a complete breakdown in the evening commute because of poor oversight of electrical work. Permut should have been shown the exit door some time ago. Who has held him accountable for his actions (and inactions)? I hope his successor will address the multiple issues facing Metro North and communicate clearly what changes are underway. View Comment
I find it amazing that in light of the fare increases for Metro North, and rising state gasoline taxes supposedly earmarked for transportation, that 100-year-old cantenary wires have not been replaced. Guess it's not a moment too soon that the chairman of Metro North was invited to step down. (Might get nauseous if I hear about the severance pay to Mr. Permut.) And who is his successor - what are that person's plans? Ms. Inzitari, here is an opportunity for you and your colleagues to do some digging and provide some answers.

M3Driver: I hope you meant "repeal." Agreed, in most instances. Our forefathers would not have seen the need for people to be armed to the teeth with weapons capable of killing and maiming dozens of others in practically an instant. When they wrote the second amendment, pistols and rifles were used to defend against wild animals, pirates, poachers, intruders, British soldiers, etc. -- not to commit mass murders. People have stretched the meaning of "the right to bear arms" way beyond its original context. View Comment
Who is auditing the MTA? How much of the fare increases are going into new train cars, safety improvements and new equipment versus salaries for a bloated administration? How much of the MTA's budget is going toward construction of the new World Trade Center? These are the questions commuters should ask at public hearings, and that our government representatives should ask of the MTA. Clearly Metro North's string of safety failures this year indicate that corners are being cut and people have been killed and injured as a result. View Comment
Perhaps it would have been clearer to say "the evidence might be suitable for DNA analysis which was not available in 1988." At any rate, if this is the rapist, we should all be glad that this scum is behind bars.
Yesterday's Norwalk Hour described Muniz as a "career criminal" who had served eight years for for a 1980 conviction for first-degree sexual assault and first-degree burglary. Just six days after his release from prison, Stratford police picked him up for assault, carrying a pistol without a permit and criminal trespass. About two months later, Muniz got another assault charge in Bridgeport. He began serving another prison term in March 1989. His criminal record contained 12 aliases and covered three states. He had no criminal activity (on record) since 2003. But he doesn't sound like a good guy, does he? View Comment
