Severe Thunderstorm Watch Put In Place In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Potentially volatile weather conditions continue Thursday with a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Fairfield County until 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain struck most of Fairfield County early Wednesday evening, too.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely for Wednesday evening, and could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. A 60 percent chance of precipitation in the afternoon increases to 80 percent into the evening and overnight.

These storms arrive even as Hurricane Arthur, the first storm of the season, moves up the East Coast. That could bring storms, heavy rains and flash floods to Fairfield County through Independence Day on Friday, July 4, according to and the National Weather Service.

The hurricane, which is making its way up the East Coast is hitting a slow-moving cold front in the area, which will make for a damp start to Independence Day weekend in Fairfield County. But skies are expected to clear for Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and thunderstorms will roll through the area Thursday afternoon and into Friday morning. High Temperatures on Thursday are expected to reach 86 degrees with an 80 percent chance of rain. Heavy rain could fall Thursday night and into Friday.

Precipitation will remain in the area for Friday with a high of 79 and a 70 percent chance of wet weather.

Friday will be cooler, with a high of 81 and a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms earlier in the day. expects the tropical storm to turn east and head out to sea, which could provide some clearing by Friday evening.

Skies will clear for Saturday and Sunday with temperatures in the low 80s.
