The worst of the snow had now passed over Fairfield by midmorning Wednesday, but not before dumping more than a foot of snow. Forecasts predicted occasional snow showers throughout Wednesday, with about three to five more inches of accumulation by the end of the day.
Department of Public Works crews were on the streets starting their major cleanups. Once again, high-volume roads and steep inclines got top priority, followed by side streets once clear. The DPW asked that residents stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary to allow things to run as smoothly as possible.
Not that most people have reason to go out. Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway were both reportedly at near-standstills because of accidents and weather-related problems.
For the most part, Fairfielders are heeding the warning. The Fairfield Police received reports of only three motor vehicle accidents between midnight and noon. Though four additional drivers needed help from the cops to get out of the snow.
Though schools, and many local businesses were closed for the day, the town itself was working to get back on track. Farirfields offices were scheduled to reopen at 1 p.m., along with the Fairfield Public Library. However, Fairfield has now decided to leep its offices closed for the rest of the day, along with the library.
Fairfielders dealing with the snow could at least take solace in the fact that they still had power. United Illuminating reported no outages in the entire grid as of 12:25 p.m.
