As a result of Amazon's recent acquisition of Whole Foods Market, the grocery chain will lower prices on best-selling items at its Fairfield County stores and other locations beginning Monday. It cut prices by as much as 43 percent on some items its first day as owner.
There are currently five Whole Foods locations in Fairfield County: Danbury, Darien, Westport, Greenwich and Fairfield. Other Connecticut locations include West Hartford, Glastonbury and Milford.
“We’re determined to make healthy and organic food affordable for everyone. Everybody should be able to eat Whole Foods Market quality – we will lower prices without compromising Whole Foods Market’s long-held commitment to the highest standards,” said Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer.
“And this is just the beginning – we will make Amazon Prime the customer rewards program at Whole Foods Market and continuously lower prices as we invent together. There is significant work and opportunity ahead, and we’re thrilled to get started.”
Whole Foods announced that it will begin offering lower prices on best-selling organic staples in its stores. Items that will be cheaper include whole trade bananas, avocados, large brown eggs, responsibly-farmed salmon and tilapia, baby kale and baby lettuce, ground beaf, almond butter, Gala and Fuji apples, rotisserie chicken, and more.
“It’s been our mission for 39 years at Whole Foods Market to bring the highest quality food to our customers,” said John Mackey, Whole Foods Market co-founder and CEO. “By working together with Amazon and integrating in several key areas, we can lower prices and double down on that mission and reach more people with Whole Foods Market’s high-quality, natural and organic food.”
The store announced that it will also integrate Amazon Prime into its point-of-sale system, offering discounts and other benefits to Amazon Prime customers. Several Whole Foods label products including 365 Everyday Value, Whole Foods Market, Whole Paws and Whole Catch, will be available through Amazon.com. Amazon customers can also have products from Amazon.com shipped to a local Whole Foods store for pickup.
