Albert Kleban, of Kleban Properties, acknowledged his company's interest in the property with a statement that negotiations had begun for the purchase of the property "if at all possible," the Connecticut Post said.

Kleban's company owns various commercial properties in Fairfield, including the Brick Wall retail and office complex downtown, reported the Connecticut Post.

GE announced the move to Boston in a statement last week. The Fortune 500 company is planning to move 200 of its 800 employees to Massachusetts in phases beginning this summer.

GE said it plans to sell the headquarters, a 68-acre campus in Fairfield near the Merritt Parkway. The company pays $1.5 million per year in property tax on that property to the town of Fairfield.
