FAIRFIELD, CONN. -- Swimming will be off limits at Lake Mohegan in Fairfield today, July 5, because of possibly elevated bacterial levels.
The town's health department, which tests the water at public facilities every week, made the preemptive decision to close the lake after more than 1 inch of rain fell in a 24-hour period.
Previous studies by the health department found that that amount of rainfall can raise bacteria levels that exceed state and federal environmental standards.
If there is no significant rainfall in the next 24 hours, the lake will reopen on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, local health officials said all coastal swimming areas – such as South Pine Creek and Sasco beaches – are open.
For more information, call the health department at (203) 256-3020, or the recreation department, at (203) 256-3144.
