Agnes 'Kit' 'Sullivan, 93, Ridgewood Resident

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Agnes "Kit" (Marchiel) Sullivan, of Ridgewood, died on Thursday, Jan. 26. She was 93.

"Kit was a woman of many talents," information from the funeral home noted. "Having grown up in a Polish neighborhood, she did not learn English until she began school. She flourished in academia and was named a national merit scholar upon graduating from Girls High School in 1941."

Until the birth of her children, Sullivan was an employee of AT&T in New York City. Afterward, she worked for the Ridgewood Board of Education, until she retired in 1988. She then volunteered in local elementary schools and libraries.

"A lifelong avid reader, Kit passed on her love of reading to her children and grandchildren, spending countless hours teaching them to read," the funeral home added. "She was an enthusiastic traveler of Europe and the Middle East in her younger years, as well as a painter, a dancer and a cook."

Sullivan is survived by her children, Marianne Mertens of Ridgewood, Brian Sullivan of Tuxedo, New York, and Sharon Weslow of Fairfield, Connecticut; and grandchildren Joseph and Meghan Mertens, and Claire and James Weslow.

She was preceded by her husband of 41 years, James Sullivan; parents Franciszek and Teofila (Miesojed) Marchiel; and siblings Chester, Lottie Stebulis and Mary Roman.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at St. Catharine Roman Catholic Church, in Glen Rock. Interment will follow, at Christ the King Cemetery, in Franklin Lakes. C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home, in Ridgewood, is assisting with arrangements.
