Mariah Anderson, 23, of Wade Street, turned herself in at Fairfield police headquarters.
Police said they applied for an arrest warrant for Anderson after she reportedly stole $100 from a cash register at Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue.
According to the arrest report, the store's loss prevention called police after reviewing surveillance footage from Nov. 21 that showed Anderson take $100 in $5 bills out of the podium that sits in front of the row of cash registers. Anderson worked as a front end supervisor for Stop & Shop at the time, police said.
Anderson told police that she had taken the money because another employee had told her to do so. Surveillance footage shows Anderson taking the money and then delivering it to another employee working a cash register during the same shift, according to police.
Anderson said she had about $90 in $5 bills in her purse that she planned to use to replace the $100 taken out of the cash register, and that the money was for the other employee and was not meant to be shared with her, police said.
But when confronted, Anderson confessed the taking the money, adding that she had never done this before, police said.
Anderson was charged with sixth-degree larceny Wednesday morning and released on a promise to appear in court on Jan. 8.
