A driver on Route 15 called 911 at about 5:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, and said he was being followed by a white SUV with the driver screaming at him from his moving vehicle and waiving a large machete toward him and out the window, State Police said.

Several units responded as the white SUV followed the caller on Route 15 from Meriden to Exit 59 in New Haven.

According to police, the driver of the white SUV exited via the Exit 59 off ramp to Route 69 in New Haven, where he was stopped by state police officers.

The driver was identified as Richard Walzak, 43, of Fairfield, by the photo on his Connecticut operator's license, police said.

According to police, Walzak provided consent for police to search his vehicle, and a large machete was found behind the passenger's seat.

Walzak denied having been involved in any sort of road rage incident or any incident on the highway at all, police said.

He had no explanation for how another motorist knew of the machete in his car, police said.

Police took him into custody and charged with second-degree breach of peace, and second-degree threatening. Walzak was released on $3,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 9 in Meriden.
