FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Two New York women are facing larceny charges after police said they shoved merchandise under their clothes and used aluminum foil to trick security detectors at a local department store Friday.

Dorothy Williams-Cruz, 52, of Ely Avenue, Bronx, N.Y., and Sandra Smith-Nelson, 49, of East 225th Street, Bronx, N.Y., each were charged with sixth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and possession of a shoplifting device in the incident, which happened around 5 p.m. at the Kohl’s on Tunxis Hill Road, police said.

A store loss prevention officers saw the women putting items under their clothing, but the theft did not trigger security detectors because they had wrapped the security devices in aluminum foil, police said.

When officers arrived, Williams-Cruz and Smith-Nelson were arguing with store employees in the parking lot, police said. Smith-Nelson was found with $220 in stolen items and Williams-Cruz had $326, police said.

Each was released after posting $1,000 bond. They are due to appear in court Dec. 7.
