Upon arrival, the first units reported heavy fire coming from the rear of the house, the statement said. The entire back of the house as well as over half of the interior was on fire, the statement said.

The Fire Department initiated an aggressive attack using multiple hand lines. Assistant Fire Chief Schuyler Sherwood arrived at the same time as the first Engine Company and assumed command.

Units searched the home for occupants, and determined that there was no one inside, the statement said. The homeowner arrived and reported that everyone was out of the house, and that they were not currently living at the house, the statement said.

All on-duty Fairfield Fire Department resources were required to control the blaze.

Assistance was requested to the scene from the Westport Fire Department, the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, AMR, a town of Fairfield building official and United Illuminating.

The fire was placed under control at 12:09 a.m., the statement said. Neighboring houses were monitored for levels of carbon monoxide.

Fire Chief Denis McCarthy and Deputy Chief Kyran Dunn were also on the scene providing command support. No injuries were reported at the scene. The home suffered extensive damage.
