Geronimo's In Fairfield Proves Hot Spot For Motor Vehicle Theft

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Patrons of Geronimo’s Tequila Bar and Southwest Grill on Post Road in Fairfield may want to consider finding parking elsewhere, or leaving their vehicles at home all together.

The new restaurant, which replaced The Shake after Hurricane Sandy, has been the target of about 15 motor vehicle thefts since May, including one Monday night, according to Fairfield police.

The latest in the string of thefts is similar to previous ones, where an individual smashed a car window to gain entry to the vehicle, police said. The smash and grab on Monday resulted in no loss of property, but the owner of the vehicle said a diamond ring in the center console was left untouched, police said.

An increase in police presence in the area may have resulted to a lead in the case, according to police. Over the holiday weekend, an undercover officer said he was parked in the Geronimo’s parking lot in an unmarked cruiser and saw a man run from across the train tracks, dropping possibly stolen items before running into a back door of the restaurant.

A check with management showed that no employee had taken a break at that time, however, a later investigation resulted in less-than-confident answers from management that an employee could possibly be involved, police said.

Investigators were able to obtain video surveillance that showed a male suspect entering through a back, public door, dressed in all black, but was not identified as an employee, police said.

The incident Monday resulted in $250 worth of damage, as many past thefts have, police said. Other thefts have occurred to cars that were left unlocked, allowing a suspect easy access to at times expensive belongings left in the vehicle, police said.
