While on patrol, a Fairfield officer reported seeing the car driving erratically, police said.

According to the police report, the officer had been stationed at South Pine Creek and the Post Road after 1 a.m. Sunday when he saw a car driving fast down the Post Road, at one point driving on the sidewalk.

While following the driver, the officer saw the car "violently hitting" the curbs and swerving, police said. The officer then turned on the patrol car lights and pulled the car over, police said.

When the driver, identified as Mark Wittkofske 23, of Milford, was asked what was wrong, he said the officer had scared him but did not elaborate as to why, police said.

Wittkofske told the officer that he had left a party in Stratford, where he had only one beer, and was driving home to Milford, police said.

The officer saw a pipe wrapped in aluminum foil and found residue that tested positive for marijuana on the copper mesh, in plain view inside the car, police said.

Wittkofske had glassy eyes and pinpoint pupils, the officer said. He was asked to perform the three standard field sobriety tests and failed, police said.

Wittkofske was charged with failure to drive right, driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana of less than 4 ounces. He was released on a promise to appear in court on July 14.
