Murphy's op-ed, which was posted Friday, is titled: "How Trump Just Made America Less Safe: The president just handed ISIS a path to rebirth."
In the piece, Murphy says, "The decision to turn our backs on millions of men, women, and children attempting to flee torture and terror shrinks us as a nation, and marks an unconscionable abandonment of our founding principles.
"Trump has now handed ISIS a path to rebirth. They can and will use his announcement today as confirmation that America is at war with Muslims, especially those Muslims living in desperate circumstances. Their recruitment bulletin boards will light up with new material. Their entreaties to would-be lone wolf attackers in America will have new energy and purpose."
Murphy gives other reasons for alarm: such as leading Americans to believe that terrorists can be contained simply by focusing on a few countries while excluding Saudi Arabia and European nations.
He also blasts the order for turning the country's back on millions of men, women, and children attempting to flee torture and terror, saying it "shrinks us as a nation, and marks an unconscionable abandonment of our founding principles."
Murphy calls the executive order a "moral abomination" and "fundamentally un-American."
"And it is dangerous – it will give life back to the terrorist movement and eventually get Americans killed," Murphy said. "This isn’t who we are. It’s not who we should be. And I will fight this policy with all that I have."
By Saturday, protesters had descended at airports around the country and, in response to a filing by the ACLU, U.S. District Court Judge Ann Donnelly in New York blocked the federal government from deporting anyone held in custody as a result of Trump's executive order issued Friday.
This happened as 100 to 200 travelers from the Muslim-majority countries were held at various airports around the country, according to Politico.com.
During the emergency court session held Saturday night, Donnelly said the travelers should be allowed to stay since they were routinely admitted just a couple of days ago. Her order protected only the small number of individuals who were already on or were about to board flights to the U.S. when Trump signed his measure, Politico.com said. Now, such travelers will likely be blocked from boarding flights, the story said.
