Runners To Hit The Streets In 38th Annual Southport Thanksgiving Race

SOUTHPORT, Conn., -- Another annual tradition will be held Thursday as the 38th annual Pequot Runners Thanksgiving Day Five-Mile Race will be held in Southport.

It begins at 8:15 a.m. at the Wakeman Boys/Girls Club, 385 Center St. In addition to the 5 mile race there will also be a 2.6 mile walk through Southport Harbor for those who prefer the ease of a scenic Thanksgiving Day stroll.

“We’re now in our 38th year and we have always strived to put on a safe, enjoyable event for all”, said Race Director, Jeff Palmer. “With the continued support from our sponsors we are confident that we will again be able provide significant donations to local charities.” The race has benefited organizations including the Wakeman Boys/Girls Club of Southport, Westport EMS , the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, Fairfield Counseling Services , the Laddie Lawrence Scholarship Fund (founded by the Pequot Running Club) at Staples High School in Westport, Weston High School Boosters, Westport EMS and the Fairfield Police Explorers.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers with $300.00 for first, $150.00 for second and $100.00 for third. There will also be a post-race raffle with many prizes including a hybrid bike from Cycle Dynamics of Westport.

The first 5500 entrants will receive a long sleeve, 100% cotton T-shirt. The easiest way to enter is online at www.pequotrunners.org. Entrants may also sign up in person at the Wakeman Boys/Girls Club in Southport on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, from 7:00 p.m. to 9 p.m.Race day registration is also available until 7:45 a.m. but no shirts will be given to race-day registrants.

The 5-mile course through Southport and Westport’s “Gold Coast” has long been a favorite of many runners and the post-race raffle has always been popular. The Trumbull Bagpipe Band will be back for the 32nd consecutive year to lead the runners to the starting line.

Co-sponsored by CopreMotion of Westport, Darien Rowayton Bank, ASF Outdoors of Westport, Southport/Westport Family Dental, Hearing, Balance & Speech Center, Poland Spring Water, Cycle Dynamics, Trinity Episcopal Church and Fred’s Car Wash, the race is one of the largest in Connecticut and the largest five-mile race in the state.
