"Joey was much beloved by many in the local community. The outpouring of support expressed by classmates, teammates, teachers, and parents gives testimony to the enduring impact of his young life on those who were blessed to know him," said the Rev. Thomas Simisky, S.J., president of Fairfield Prep, in a statement.

"In just one semester here, Joey’s enthusiasm inspired many with whom he shared classes and rowed on the crew team."

Fairfield Prep was opening its doors at 1 p.m. Thursday for Joey's friends and loved ones to gather in prayerful support.

The school chapel will be open, with a prayer service to follow in the Student Life Center at 2 p.m.

Priests, campus ministers, and counselors will also be available throughout the afternoon and in the coming week for students, friends and staff, Simisky said.

"The mystery of suffering goes beyond words and reason. And yet, the power of God’s love surpasses even the depths of human despair," Simisky said in a statement to the school community. "As one who knows the suffering of our human condition, we must cling especially close to Christ throughout these days."

He also offered prayers to the student's family.

"We especially wish God’s graces upon the Kulaga family, that they might know how our prayers and our love remain with them," Simisky said.

The single-car crash occurred at about noon Tuesday in King George County in Virginia. A Honda Pilot driven by Joseph's father, Mark E. Kulaga, 46, went off Route 301, stuck a tree and overturned. Mark Kulaga has been charged with reckless driving in the crash.
